JOE PROVISOR, M.A. LMFT

Joe Provisor, M.A, LMFT, is the co-founder of Circle Ways, an organization dedicated to training educators to integrate council and restorative practices as pedagogy into daily classroom routines and systemically into school communities.

Joe holds two Masters Degrees, in English and Clinical Psychology, is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist, and has been a public school teacher for over thirty years.  He began circle practice with public school students in 1986 and has been an Ojai Foundation Council Trainer since 1994, providing workshops for educators, therapists, and business people nationally and internationally.   From 2006 to December 2013 he served as Program Specialist for the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he co-founded the Council Practitioners’ Center (CPC), later the Council in Schools Program (CIS) through the district’s Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support. During that time, the CPC and CIS brought systemic council and restorative practices to over 65 LA schools.

Circle Ways partners with schools that want to implement a restorative approach to social-emotional learning, discipline, and school culture. With decades of experience bringing restorative practices and conflict resolution services to schools, families, organizations, and communities, we offer a whole-school approach to developing social and emotional skills, preventing and addressing misbehavior, building a positive school climate, and supporting students to achieve academic and lifelong success.

Restorative practices are grounded in age-old ways of indigenous peoples and in modern insights from the fields of psychology, sociology, law, education, neuroscience, and organizational behavior. Restorative practices are evidence-based, with a track record of benefits

Joe is the author of numerous curricular and training materials for language arts instruction and for the council process, including An Introduction to Council for Educators: Training Manual.  He is currently at work on a book to be titled Teaching and Learning in Circles.
